I landed last week. A winter characterised by mild humid temperatures and grey skies. The Netherlands. Western Europe. A functional country, mainly consisting of infrastructure. Dug out of the ocean by its inhabitants, space in this place is the result of hard labour. Thus it must not be wasted.
Urban planning and geometry lie at the very heart of this country. Rectangular shapes dominate. Square fields and grids.
The city of Rotterdam in the southern Netherlands. It is not your typical Dutch city as the central district does not contain an old town. But if you consider the characteristics I came up with earlier for this country, the modern city center of Rotterdam might actually be much more typically Dutch than you would initially think.
These photos might seem grey and rainy. Welcome to Europe. Deal with it. Wear a jacket.
That's it for today. See you soon.
